The Chess Club hasn’t run in over two years due to a lack of members.
However, sophomore German exchange student, Eike Irrgang, introduced the idea of reopening the club to English teacher, Mr. Cox, as the club was in need of a faculty adviser. Mr. Cox reluctantly accepted the offer.
“Problem solving is something that chess really hits on, because they’re constantly reacting to different things that change on the port,” Cox said.
The club is open to all, as experienced members are able to mentor beginners.
Having people to enjoy the company of is nice, and can have a positive impact on students’ academic and social life.
When asked about advice to prospective members, sophomore Dylan Pratt stated that,
“You don’t have to worry about knowing everything; just go in, connect with people, and learn little by little,” Pratt said.
Renowned actor Will Smith stated that chess is more than a game, he claims that the strategies used in chess helped him to navigate the entertainment world and his own personal life.
Chess Club focuses on individualism and provides a good environment for growing skills.
Despite challenges like finding new members, the calming environment of the club provides students with a way to decompress at the end of the day.
