Over the past decade, the Detroit Lions have been notorious for being the worst team in NFL history. In 2008, they claimed the title of being the first team to have zero wins in a season.
Even though the Lions have had horrible seasons, they have produced some of the greatest athletes in American Football.
For example, Barry Sanders led the Lions to their first NFC championship in 1991 while averaging five yards a carry.
Then there’s Calvin Johnson, also known as Megatron due to his dominance and historic season, in which he received for 1,964 yards.
The Lions have consistently demonstrated their ability to choose the right players for the job. From 2010 to 2024, they drafted arguably some of the best players in the league, including Frank Ragnow, Taylor Decker, Penei Sewell, Graham Glasglow, Jamhyr Gibbs, Amon Ra St-Brown, Aidan Hutchinson, and finally, Mathew Stafford, who unfortunately is no longer with the Lions.
Four of those draft picks have now formed the best offensive line in the league. This allowed the Lions to utilize versatile players such as Gibbs, who averaged five yards a carry in his rookie year and is one of the best running backs in the NFL. St Brown, who emerged recently as one of the best receivers in the NFL, was also good for 119 receptions for 1,515 yards and ten touchdowns last season.
In 2020, the Lions’ owner, Sheila Ford Hamp, hired head coach Dan Campbell, along with general manager Brad Holmes
Campbell and Holmes are two of the most significant decisions ever made by the Lions front office, because they turned the franchise into a top-three team overnight.
The first year was tough, going 3-13-1. In the second season, The Lions struggled but ended up finishing strong, going 9-8. They were one of the best teams in their third season, going 12-5.
This year’s Lions are 14 weeks in and are already 12-2 they are arguably the best team in the league, even with many injures across the entire defense, including Aidan Hutchinson and David Montgomery
The Lions have advanced each years since Campbell took over.
One of the main reasons for this dynasty is Jared Goff, the team’s star quarterback. Goff is a Super Bowl-worthy quarterback. This year, Goff went 18-18 for passing completions and 292 yards for two touchdowns while getting one receiving touchdown against the Seahawks in week four.
Another stat was set this past weekend on december 5, Jared Goff is the only QB to ever have 400+ passing yards and fiveTDs and not win the game.
Other leaders of the pack/team include Aidan Hutchinson, one of the greatest defensive ends in Michigan football history, along with Penei Sewell, one of history’s most outstanding college linemen due to his legendary career.
These two are freak athletes. They dominate others who have been in the league for a long time and have built their reputations as top-three players in an insanely short period.
The Lions have proven time and time again that their team is incomparable, even during the tough losses. The players’ and coaches’ playing style and versatility are unmatched, which is why the Superbowl rings will inevitably end up on their fingers at the end of the season.
